I don't think art shops are bad. I really don't. But I do think they are pretty much useless to beginners and nobody really says this out loud.

They're designed for people who already know what they want. Someone who's been painting for years and needs a specific cadmium yellow because they've run out? The art shop is great for them. Huge range, detailed info, loads of options.

For someone who just wants to start painting and needs some colours? It's a nightmare. Wall to wall options, overwhelming information, specialised terminology that means nothing if you're new. 

A lot of people go into an art shop excited about starting a new hobby and come out feeling like maybe it's not for them after all. And I find that genuinely so sad because they give up before they've even put paint to canvas.

I realised the thing that would actually help is if someone just made the colour decisions for you. Figured out which shades belong together, built a palette that works, and handed it over so you could skip straight to the painting.
